Activision CEO: Call of Duty “Not Immune” to Pre-Order Downturn

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg declared during an earnings call yesterday that the video games industry has been hit by a pre-order downturn, and that the Call of Duty franchise is “not immune” to the effects of the drop. He attributed this change to a number of factors including “increased digital consumption, particularly on the next-gen consoles, titles being widely available on day one, and the decline overall of demand for software on previous-gen consoles.”

At the same time, Hirshberg seems optimistic about the Call of Duty franchise, stating that he expects it to “lead the industry in pre-orders once again this year.” He also said that pre-order numbers aren’t the only thing that Activision looks at, and going by various other metrics, it seems that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be purchased by more people than Call of Duty: Ghosts was.

What do you make of Hirshberg’s remarks?
