gamescom 2014: Mortal Kombat X Story is a “Direct Continuation” of Mortal Kombat 9, Covers 25 Years

Speaking to IGN at gamescom 2014, Ed Boon spilled some beans about Mortal Kombat X’s story mode and characters. He said that the much-awaited game’s story will be a “direct continuation” of Mortal Kombat 9’s, but that it will cover a span of 25 years.

There are periods that are directly after MK9, then there are periods that are five, ten, 15 and 20 years out. A lot of the events take place 25 years after where we see older versions of the characters, like Cassie Cage and all that. But it does jump around in time; it’s not a linear thing.

Boon didn’t go into further details but did say that Kotal Kahn and his relationship with D’vorah will have a role to play.

You still play the different chapters and each chapter has a character where it follows their actions, but instead of just jumping from one character to the next, it’ll jump in time as well.

He also revealed that the story is going to be pretty “bold” and that we’ll witness the rise and fall of certain characters throughout the game. NetherRealm is also planning to introduce a “New-ality” that we’ll get to hear about soon.
