Yoshida Explains PS4 Share Play, Any Game That Uses DualShock 4 is Compatible (Update)

Update:

In an email, Sony has clarified what Yoshida has said regarding Share Play’s save data functionality. The one who’s playing for free who doesn’t own the game (the “visitor) won’t be able to save their player data on their own PSN account.

Here’s Sony’s statement on the subject:

In Share Play, the visitor (the one who doesn’t own the game) takes over the host (the one who owns the game)’s account, so the visitor cannot save their play data onto their own account.

This bit of  info has also been amended from Famitsu’s article, which is the source of the news.

Original Story:

Sony’s upcoming Share Play feature for the PlayStation 4 has created quite the buzz, and people understandably want to know more about how it works. Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida has answered some of the popular questions in an interview with the Japanese Weekly Famitsu magazine, a translation of which has been offered by Kotaku. Apparently, any game which uses the DualShock 4 (not a PlayRoom game) will be compatible with SharePlay.

How it works is, for example, say, a friend has a game that I don’t. I ask them to let me play it, and if they send me an invitation, I can access their PS4 and play while watching the video that is streamed. You could call it a mini PlayStation Now. There is no need for developers to do anything for their games to be compatible with SharePlay.

Another feature that Yoshida has detailed is the game save. You can save your game data to your own account rather than the host’s. So if you like the game enough to want to buy your own copy, go ahead and purchase it, and continue where you left off. “Or, if you get stuck in a game, or there’s an enemy or stage you find difficult, you could hand over the reins to a friend for those areas,” he said.

PS4 Share Play will be available via PlayStation update v2.00.
