Bungie Reveals Destiny’s Week One Stats, 137 Million Activities Played, PvP Rewards Tweak Hinted

Reviews of Destiny may have been pretty mixed, but they didn’t stop players from investing a significant amount of time into the game. In its latest weekly update, Bungie has revealed that within the first seven days of its release, Destiny was played for 100 million hours, with a total of 137 million activities played. Not only that, but the average gameplay session per player lasts about three hours during weekdays and four hours during weekends! Sample stats released by Bungie are as follows:

  • 100 Million Hours Played – Enough to watch the entirety of The Lord of the Rings trilogy 8,797,653 times. And yes, we are talking about the Special Extended Editions.
  • 137 Million Activities Played – The equivalent of 535,156 regular seasons of the NFL. (Our European fans may know it as “American Handegg.”)
(note: one Crucible match would be considered a single activity, even though it may feature 12 unique players)
  • The Average Gameplay Session lasts about 3 hours. On weekdays. On weekends it turns out you have some extra time to kill, raising the average up to more than 4 hours per session.
  • 1 Billion Players “Served” in the Crucible (player deaths).

These stats aren’t too surprising since Destiny not only managed to sell through $500 million to retail stores and first parties within 24 hours, but also managed to sell $325 million to customers within five days.

In the same weekly update, Bungie also hinted that the PvP reward system is likely to be tweaked in the future. Community Manager David “Deej” Dague said:

The question you should be asking is: Do we intend for the PVP reward system to work like that forever? The answer is: Ask us again sometime. We’re one week clear of the launch pad here. What we can promise is that Destiny is never finished.

With regards to weapon balancing for the Crucible, Deej said that this is something that the developer discusses regularly, and that its listening to fan feedback.
