Sony is hoping that its PlayStation division will help them cut their huge losses, which are mostly stemming from its floundering mobile division.
According to the market research firm VGChartz, Sony’s PS4 console has had strong sales with 10.3 million systems being sold as of September 6, which is almost double the amount of Xbox One systems sold. Officially, Sony itself only reported 10 million systems sold, as opposed to 10.3 million.
These strong sales, coupled with the numerous games and add-on content that are bought for the PS4, has given Sony hope that the system can help them cut their losses, which are expected to be around $2 billion by the end of the year.
Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai said that he hopes that the PS4 will make Sony as much money as the PS2 did, as it brought Sony some $1 billion in annual operating profit when the console was at its peak. He also mentioned that he is expecting the PS4 to sell better than the PS3.
I do feel we have a higher opportunity to build a higher ARPU (average revenue per user) than with the PS3, and that should make a very strong profit contribution over the life-cycle
