Even if movie adaptations of games haven’t been that well received by gamers, that’s not stopping Threshold Entertainment from making a live-action movie based on the ’80s puzzle game, Tetris.
Yep, you read that right. There’s a movie being made based on oddly formed shapes falling down to form a straight line. No director or cast have been announced so far, but there’s already a “story.”
According to Threshold CEO Larry Kasanoff, “It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie…This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”
If the film proves successful, Kasanoff isn’t just limiting Tetris to the big-screen stating, “We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness.”
Kasanoff might not be a household name, but he was the one responsible for the 1995 film Mortal Kombat which is based on the fighting game. As possibly one of the only movies based on games that were tolerable, this gives me hope yet. But how can a game that didn’t have a story itself be able to translate itself to film without stretching too far from its source material? Your guess is as good as mine at this point.
Would you even want to see a movie based on Tetris? What plausible storyline do you think will make sense?
