Yoshida: Our Games “Need to Show Why Buying a PS4 is a Good Idea”

With a holiday that includes first-party titles DriveClub and LittleBigPlanet 3, the PlayStation 4 doesn’t have a lot of games only be appearing on PlayStation. Meanwhile, the biggest titles of the year – Advanced Warfare, Destiny, NBA 2K15, Grand Theft Auto V, Far Cry 4 and more – will be coming to multiple platforms.

Speaking with Weekly Famitsu, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida revealed that he doesn’t see the number of multi-platform titles coming to PS4 as a bad thing:

I think it’s fine to start from there. If the number of PS4 users increases from there and they tell their friends, ‘the games look prettier on the PS4,’ or ‘the loading time’s faster,’ or ‘using the SHARE function is fun’ then the sales for PS4 versions of games will increase and game creators may think ‘let’s focus on developing for the PS4 from here.’

Yoshida then agreed that the role of first-party games becomes more important with third-party developers making their games multi-platform, adding, “We need to show why buying a PS4 is a good idea through our games.” They’ll continue doing this early next year when both Bloodborne and The Order: 1886 launch in February.

As for making PS4 the best place to play, you’ve already seen Sony increasing the value of a game with the Destiny timed-exclusive content, and that will continue with titles like NBA 2K15 and Far Cry 4. There’s also the fact that PS4 games tend to have an easier time reaching 1080p than they do on Xbox One.

Of course, no interview with Shuhei Yoshida is complete without asking about The Last Guardian, and this time around, he admittedly exaggerated that “development couldn’t be better.” He added, “We continue to work diligently on the game, so please look forward to it.”
