Resident Evil Producer: VR Makes “Perfect Sense” for Horror Games

With virtual reality devices such as the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus are making waves, it’s an inevitability that horror games will make its way onto the platform.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Producer Michiteru Okabe feels the same way. In an interview with Game Informer, Okabe mentions how it makes “perfect sense” for horror games to be playable using VR tech.

Speaking personally, I’m really excited about VR…I think it makes sense. Having gone from 2D to 3D, now it’s time to surround yourself in these worlds instead of just having a screen in front of you. It makes sense; the technology is there.

Okabe adds that it makes a “special kind of sense” for horror games to be available for VR since the level of immersion is more important compared to other genres.

It makes sense for a lot of game genres; I think it makes a special kind of sense for horror games where immersion is more important than perhaps in other genres…I think we should most definitely start thinking about what we could do with that kind of technology in the future. It makes perfect sense.

In the same interview, Resident Evil HD Remaster Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi also chimed in for horror games on VR, and revealed that the team at Capcom recreated the mansion from the first Resident Evil in VR for a prototype. Hirabayashi also joked that if another Resident Evil remake should come around, that it should be done with virtual reality in mind.

As a horror fan, I can see why horror games would be a good fit for the tech. Let’s just hope Sony announces the release date and price for Project Morpheus soon so we can finally experience some in-your-face horror experiences.
