The Division Dev Explains the Game’s Graphical “Downgrade” for Console Versions

In a recent interview with Open World Games, Massive Entertainment’s Martin Hulberg responded to the claim that the developers may need to “downgrade” The Division‘s graphics from PC for the PlayStation 4 version and the Xbox One version by explaining that the term “downgrade” isn’t being used by the development team.

Instead, Hulberg explained, the team is simply working with the limits of each system. On a PC, those limits are higher than on the PS4 and the Xbox One, and so The Division may not look as good on those two consoles.

Downgrading is a weird term to use. Obviously, we want to make a game that looks the best it can on its respective format, so Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. So I think the term downgrade is a bit confusing and weird because we’re trying to get the most out of every machine we use. So Xbox gets its attention, PlayStation gets its attention, and PC of course will be able to cram it up a bit more depending on the hardware you have.

The Tom Clancy game is set to come out sometime in 2015 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. What do you think about Hulberg’s statements? Do you think that the term “downgrade” should be used or not?
