The wait for Resogun on other PlayStation platforms is only going to be a short one, with Sony announcing that Resogun is releasing for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita on December 17 in Europe and December 23 in North America. Priced at $14.99 and featuring cross-save, Resogun also includes three-way cross-buy, so if you already have the game on PlayStation 4, you can download the PS3 and PS Vita versions for free.
Unfortunately, as Housemarque warned us, Resogun won’t be the same on PS3 and PS Vita. Instead of running at 60fps like on PS4, the PS3 and PS Vita versions will run at a locked 30fps.
Pedro Sousa of Sony XDev Studio Europe explained their decision:
The development team at Climax has done everything possible to make the PS3 and PS Vita versions of the game the very best they can be for each device, and I think you’ll be very impressed with what they have managed to achieve. Picking a game that was created specifically for PS4 and bringing it to PS Vita and PS3 is very difficult, and the hardest compromise to accept during development, especially in regard to performance and graphics, is that these platforms don’t have the capability and power of PS4.
Duly, the biggest technical difference is that the PS Vita and PS3 games run at 30 instead of 60 frames-per-second. This was a very difficult decision to consider, but a very necessary one to allow the team to focus on what was possible and to make the best game possible for both of these platforms. The frame-rate is locked, so you can expect solid performance even under a big storm of voxels.
Despite the drop in frame-rate, “all of the features” seen in the original PS4 release are present in the game on PS3 and PS Vita, and Resogun has been ‘specifically tuned’ for the two new platforms.
On PS Vita, Resogun includes ad-hoc co-op so you can team up with a friend, and the touch features allow you to choose between using the face buttons or touch controls for any action. You can also throw humans by swiping on the rear touch pad.
Up next for Resogun, we’ll hear about the newest piece of DLC at PlayStation Experience this weekend.
