Naughty Dog: Uncharted 4 May Not be 60fps If It Impacts the Player’s Experience

When Naughty Dog showed off their lengthy Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End gameplay demo at PlayStation Experience last month, it was running at 1080p and a stable 30fps. Back in July 2014, Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer was asked about the potential of 1080p/60fps for Uncharted 4, and he replied, “I think that’s what we want to push for with anything we’re doing on this generation.”

In a recent interview with EDGE magazine, Game Director Bruce Straley revealed that Uncharted 4 is actually running above 30 frames-per-second right now, but they won’t go for 60fps if it impacts the overall experience:

We’re actually above 30, but we locked it [for the demo]. We’re going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player’s experience, then it’s our choice as developers to say, ‘Well, we’re going to go for the experience over the 60 frames.’

According to EDGE, a debug station they saw revealed it was running at 37fps.

If Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End does end up at 60fps when it launches later this year on PlayStation 4, it would be the first time an Uncharted game wasn’t at 30fps.
