Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the Best-Selling Video Game of 2014 Worldwide at Retail

Less than a day after Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare claimed the #1 spot in the United States during December 2014 and 2014 overall, Activision announced that the latest entry into their big shooter franchise was the #1 top-selling console video game of 2014 worldwide at retail, according to data from NPD, GfK, and Activision’s estimates. Additionally, the Call of Duty franchise was #1 in the US for a sixth year in a row at retail, based on revenue.

Looking at another big Activision franchise, Skylanders Trap Team was the top-selling kids video game at retail worldwide, with Skylanders the #1 kids video game franchise of 2014 in the US and worldwide for the third year in a row, based on retail sell-through that includes toys and accessories.

Destiny, meanwhile, is the #2 top-selling console game in the US in 2014 at retail, based on revenue. As well, Destiny remains the top-selling new IP of the year, to go along with the biggest launch of a new IP in history.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg talked about the big year:

We’d like to thank our fans for making Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare the #1 top-selling video game in the world, Skylanders Trap Team the top-selling kids game in the world and Destiny the #1 new video game IP of 2014. As much fun as we had making these games, we’ve had even more fun playing alongside you. Stay tuned. We have more exciting games in store for fans this year.

He continued:

Skylanders continues its leadership position as the #1 kids video game franchise globally as well as in the U.S. by wide margins. As a global franchise in 2014, Skylanders is 30% bigger than its nearest competitor. And Skylanders Trap Team outsold its nearest competitor globally by 17%. As the creators of the ‘Toys to Life’ category, we are thrilled to continue to lead it for the third consecutive year.
