Grim Fandango Remastered Project Leader Talks About Its Creation

After over 16 years, Grim Fandango is actually making a comeback. Today, Grim Fandango Remastered will be released on PlayStation 4, PS Vita, PC, Mac, and Linux, something which its project leader, Tim Schafer, has been looking forward to for quite some time. In an interview with Eurogamer, Schafer explains why it took so long for a remake to finally come out.

One of the main reasons it took so long is I’ve been busy with other things, making new games and pursuing other stuff. I’ve always been interested in some day going back to the old properties, but we’ve been pretty busy.

And the folks over at Double Fine Productions certainly have been busy. Over the last year or so alone, the company has come out with Costume Quest 2, The “My Alien Buddy” DLC for PlayStation Move, and is currently working on a PS4 and PS Vita version of Broken Age. Even with all of those project, Schafer explained that he wanted to do something about Grim Fandango and other older games.

We’d be reminded of it every once in a while when a [new] president would come in at LucasArts and start doing stuff with what they called the Legacy Properties like the Special Edition of Monkey Island. It would remind us that there’s something to be done there. I think the Disney acquisition just reminded us once again that those things are just sitting there.

But even though Schafer wanted to do something with Grim Fandango, he knew it wouldn’t be easy to get the licensing for it. That is when he found out that Adam Boyes, the VP of publisher & developer relations at SCEA, also wanted to get a hold of it to remake the classic title, and the two companies “decided to work together.”

Luckily, it seems like everything turned out well for us fans, and Grim Fandango Remastered will be out later today. Will you be purchasing the dark and humorous remake? Be sure to check out a list of Trophies that can be earned here.
