PS4 Free-to-Play Games Will Be a “Significant Part of Our Digital Business,” Says Sony

Whether you love or hate free-to-play games, it looks like you won’t be able to escape them on the PlayStation 4 in the upcoming years.

According to Sony’s Senior Account Executive Sarah Thompson, who spoke at a 2015 Game Developers Conference presentation, Sony is planning on cultivating free-to-play games on the PS4 console, and expects it to provide a “big chunk” of its revenues in the coming years.

We’re really looking at this as a significant part of our digital business. I think that it’s going to be a really a big chunk of our revenues in the next few years; 3-5 years. And it’s already growing at amazing rates that are really quite surprising.

Already, games like Warframe and War Thunder are free-to-play titles on the PS4, and it has been confirmed that Planetside 2 will be a free-to-play title when it launches later this year.

What do you think of Sony wanting to explore more freemium PS4 games? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?
