It looks like Konami will be cutting down on console games in the future, as Konami CEO Hideki Hayakawa recently told Nikkei that the company “will pursue mobile games aggressively.”
Thanks to NeoGAF user HGH, Hayakawa’s comments have been translated from Nikkei, and it does seem to appear that Konami will be heavily cutting down on their console titles. Hayakawa explained that “mobile is where the future of gaming lies,” and even outright said that Konami’s “main platform will be mobiles.”
We will pursue mobile games aggressively. Our main platform will be mobiles.
Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies. With multiplatform games, there’s really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world.
It is not yet known how this will impact the future of Konami’s titles, but in a recent Twitter post, European Product Manager Adam Bhatti that “the future of PES is safe.”
Let us know in the comments below which other titles you hope Konami will keep around for console development.
