PlayStation’s Shuhei Yoshida: “Backward Compatibility is Hard,” Would Have Done it if it Was Easy

Yesterday, we learned from PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan that Sony was taking a different path than Microsoft and wouldn’t be bringing backwards compatibility to the PlayStation 4.

In an interview with Polygon, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida also talked about backwards compatibility, saying, “I don’t think we will change our approach. The PlayStation 4 doesn’t have backward compatibility.”

As for why Sony doesn’t want to add backwards compatibility on PS4, Shuhei mentioned there’s still a chance it could happen, but it isn’t easy:

Backward compatibility is hard. I won’t say we’ll never do it, but it’s not an easy thing to do.

If it was easy we would have done that.

Instead of adding backwards compatibility, Sony is committed to delivering new features and services, including the recently launched media player, as well as PlayStation Now:

PlayStation Now works surprisingly well. But the primary purpose of that project was to create a new network service that could be used to bring PlayStation games to multiple devices including non-PlayStation devices, like Sony and Samsung televisions.

Do you think backwards compatibility will ever be added to PS4?
