Bethesda Says Original Doom 4 Concept Was Too Much Like “Call of Doom”

Doom 4 was featured at E3 2015, but that wasn’t the first attempt at bringing back the series that Bethesda had made. In an interview with Polygon, Bethesda Softworks VP Pete Hines explained why the previous Doom 4 was scrapped, saying that it was too much like Call of Duty.

You can probably close your eyes and imagine a ‘Call of Doom’ or a ‘BattleDoom’ game, where it starts to feel way too much like: ‘Wait, this doesn’t feel like Doom, it feels like we’re playing some other franchise with a Doom skin on it.’

He then talked about everything that was wrong with it, mentioning that the combat was wrong, the speed was too slow, and more.

It wasn’t fast enough. The way that the demons worked. The visceralness of the combat. A lot of the stuff that you see with the finishing moves wasn’t part of it at all. The combat was more disconnected, you almost found yourself taking cover at times and using things from other FPSes, which might be fine for them, but for Doom it just doesn’t feel right.

Doom 4 is expected to release sometime next year. What do you think of the comments Hines made?
