Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Tetsuya Nomura Didn’t Actually Know He Was Game Director

While he’s now well aware of his position, Final Fantasy VII Remake Game Director Tetsuya Nomura didn’t actually know he was directing the game until he came across an internal presentation video earlier on in development.

In an interview with Famitsu translated by Kotaku, Nomura started by saying he tried to start up a project to remake Final Fantasy VII “quite a while ago,” but at the time it didn’t come to fruition. When Square Enix Producer Shinji Hashimoto later approached Nomura and FFVII director Yoshinori Kitase though, that’s the point things took off for the PlayStation 4 remake.

Nomura then discussed the events leading up to learning he was the Game Director:

As pre-production went along and I offered my opinions on what I thought should be done, Mr. Kitase would asked me how the individual elements should be adjusted in fine detail. It was very perplexing. Then one day, as I was checking the internal company presentation video it said ‘Director Tetsuya Nomura’ at the end.

So I called up Mr. Kitase and said, ‘It says that I’m the director for some reason.’ To which he replied, ‘Of course it does.’

In addition to the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Nomura is also directing Kingdom Hearts 3.
