Having approved guidelines to expand console sales in the country back in February, China’s Ministry of Culture has finally announced that it will be lifting the nationwide ban on manufacturing and selling of video game consoles – a decision welcomed by Sony. According to The Wall Street Journal, new rules will apply to both foreign and domestic companies.
A Sony spokesperson said that this was “great news” and that the company remains committed to the Chinese market. Nintendo and Microsoft haven’t commented on the development yet.
Back in July, a report by Niko Partners revealed that neither the PlayStation 4 nor the Xbox One were doing well in China, and predicted that only 550,000 PS4 and Xbox One units will be sold in the country by the end of this year.
It remains to be seen how this decision will impact China’s console market.
