Square Enix: Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox Deal “Wasn’t an Easy Decision,” Knew It Would Disappoint Fans

With Rise of the Tomb Raider now confirmed for PlayStation 4 release in late 2016 – a year after the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions – Examiner spoke to Phil Rogers, Square Enix CEO of the Americas and Europe, where he admitted that they knew the timed-exclusivity deal would disappoint people:

I hope fans know that it wasn’t an easy decision. I think any sort of partnership at this level is a decision that took a longtime for us to get to. The decision at a studio level, we took very, very seriously. We knew it would, in the short-term, disappoint fans.

Further explaining their decision to partner with Microsoft, Rogers says their passion and commitment “to Tomb Raider is just amazing for us,” and to see Tomb Raider showcased alongside Halo, Forza, and Gears of War was “amazing for us.”

Rogers then discussed what Microsoft’s passion for Tomb Raider means to them:

It becomes the most important thing. We’re about growing our IP, this is a long-term decision. We’re going to take Tomb Raider up to the next level. With Microsoft’s belief, passion and sort of muscle to help us deliver, we really think this is going to be an awesome game that people will enjoy for years and years to come.

Will you be buying Rise of the Tomb Raider when it comes to PS4 next year?
