Destiny: The Taken King Will Eliminate the Soft Level Cap at Level 20

In Destiny, players can reach a character level of 20 by killing monsters, completing quests, and performing other typical RPG actions, but in order to go higher, they have to earn Light levels by collecting and equipping special pieces of gear. When The Taken King expansion comes along, however, that will no longer be the case.

According to Game Informer, which visited Bungie’s studio, players will be able to reach a character level of 40 when The Taken King releases in September. Creative Director Luke Smith explained that this is so players will have more control over their own “identity.”

The conflation of gear and character level led to this place where your identity was determined by things outside of your control. We don’t want to do that.

Despite the elimination of the soft level cap, gear will still provide power boosts, and some pieces of new gear can be unlocked by leveling up.

What do you think of the new character level cap? Destiny: The Taken King is set to release September 15 for PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
