Konami Talks Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Mother Base and FOB Customization

Konami recently held a Twitter Q&A session for its upcoming title, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, in which it answered a series of questions pertaining to the customization of the Mother Base and Forward Operating Bases (FOBs). A summary of the session can be found below. Bear in mind that this was a lengthy GameSpot-exclusive event so if you want to read everything in detail, head over to the official Metal Gear twitter account here.

When asked if players can fight with their friends to defend their FOBs, Konami said that there’s no co-op feature for this, but players can defend their friends’ bases in their place, instead. In other words, you and your friends can’t defend bases at the same time.

Speaking about the Mother Base/FOB platform architecture and design, Konami said that players can determine the placement of their defenses and can decide up to what level they want each area covered. “This includes how many soldiers, security devices, or high-powered weapons are available in each area,” the developers explained. While the platforms will have a similar architecture across the community, we’re told that players’ FOBs won’t look the same since each player will develop and customize them at their own pace. Besides this, players can choose to do a variety of tasks at their Mother Base including but not limited to taking showers, target practice, talking to and fighting with fellow Diamond Dogs, etc.

A PlayStation Plus subscription is required for Metal Gear Online and FOBs, however, FOBs can be developed and base defenses can be customized offline.

Finally, Konami clarified that no additional purchases will be necessary to complete or build anything in the game unless you want to speed up development.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be out this September.
