Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain F.O.B. Mode Is Fully Accessible at Launch, Konami Clarifies

When GameSpot reviewed Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, they noticed that the competitive multiplayer mode, Forward Operating Base (F.O.B.), was locked behind a paywall, requiring you to spend in-game MB Coins to unlock it.

After the Konami PR team first said they wouldn’t have any details until launch next week, a spokesperson later confirmed:

[The F.O.B. mode will be] fully accessible at launch and the micro-transaction layer to that specific feature in the game primarily acts as an accelerator.

We can still expect to hear more details about the micro-transactions next week.

Earlier this month, Producer Kenichiro Imaizumi went on Twitter to discuss how you unlock MB Coins:

Back in June, Konami addressed the question of micro-transactions in the game by saying, “While it is true that a few micro-transaction options do exist, the entire game has been carefully balanced to be fair and enjoyable with or without using these options. There’s no pay-to-win option.”

As for the other online mode of The Phantom Pain, Metal Gear Online, it will be freely accessible when it launches on October 6.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain releases on September 1 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.
