Following news that Three Fields Entertainment, which is composed of former developers at Criterion, is making a spiritual successor to Burnout, we now know it will be based on Burnout 3!
This was revealed by Three Fields themselves over on Twitter:

Is this confirmation that the game won’t utilize an open world system like in Burnout Paradise? Maybe.
This #ShinyRedSomething (not actual title, by the way), is being developed for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. No release date has been given, but Three Fields did mention that it was interested in supporting VR with the upcoming racer.
