Confirming that the PlayStation 4 was #1 in console sales yet again, the NPD released their full report for September 2015 at US retail, which tracked sales from August 30 – October 3.
Looking at the industry as a whole, total sales were down 9% year-over-year to $1.01 billion (last year saw the launch of Destiny). This was due to hardware falling 27% to $313.5 million and software dropping 3% to $465.6 million. Accessories, however, were up 20% thanks to Amiibo and all the new toys-to-life titles.
As NPD analyst Liam Callahan notes though, hardware sales aren’t as bad as the numbers show:
The majority of hardware platforms increased their sales from August 2015 to September 2015 when comparing sales on a per week basis. All eighth generation consoles, [which includes PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U], experienced double-digit growth when comparing sales on a per-week basis.
He adds:
After 23 months on the market, combined PS4 and Xbox One sales are 40 percent higher than the combined 23 month totals for PS3 and 360.
Here’s the top 10 selling games for September 2015, which totals retail sales across all systems and includes Collectors Editions, GOTY Editions, and bundles, but not those bundled with hardware (sales by platform are ranked in brackets from highest-selling to least-selling):
- NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
- Madden NFL 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360)
