Released back in September, and removed from the PlayStation Store earlier this month, Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma for PlayStation 4 and PC “was a failure,” according to publisher Versus Evil.
Speaking with CGMagazine recently, Versus Evil General Manager Steve Escalante admitted the game was a failure and “we could not do, in good conscience, Volume 2 and Volume 3,” which were scheduled to launch at a later date.
Escalante added that they are refunding those who purchased the game/Season Pass:
So we’ve begun the process – it’s been a long process to figure it out because Sony has never really had to do this in this way – but we’re returning all the money. So across the board we’re putting out an apology saying ‘sorry about this.’
Ultimately, the reason Versus Evil removed Afro Samurai 2 was because they looked at it from a consumer perspective and “we didn’t want to exacerbate it anymore.”
In our review, we gave it a 2/10 and said, “Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume 1 is an unpleasant, deeply depressing experience throughout its short running time.” Escalante touched on the reviews for the game, saying, “It wasn’t that the game was broken or buggy, people just didn’t like it.”
According to CGMagazine, Afro Samurai 2 is completely removed from their PS4 Library and the refund was issued when the game was removed back on November 9. It is, however, available on Steam, where just 3% of the user reviews are positive.
