Nintendo Says Worldwide 3DS Sales Are Bigger Than PS4 & Xbox One Combined

Talking about the success of the 3DS with The Washington Post, Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, revealed a “shocking” fact: it’s outsold the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One worldwide.

Here’s his comment, which he made in response to a question asking how Nintendo can argue that a dedicated gaming device is relevant, given the rise of smartphones:

Nintendo 3DS is here to stay. Let me throw out a number that might surprise you. So far, on a global basis, Nintendo 3DS has sold more hardware than PS4 and Xbox One – combined. Most people find this shocking.

According to Moffitt, 3DS sales in the United States this year are ahead of last year’s pace.

Launched in early 2011, Nintendo says worldwide sales of the Nintendo 3DS are at 54.34 million, as of September 30, 2015. The Wii U, meanwhile, is at 10.73 million.

Last we heard from Sony, PlayStation 4 sales are sitting at 30.2 million. Microsoft isn’t reporting updated Xbox One sales numbers, but Xbox Boss Phil Spencer did say in October that Sony has a “huge lead.” Both consoles released in November 2013.

What do you think about Nintendo comparing 3DS sales numbers to the PS4 and Xbox One?
