Rock Band 4 Developer Putting Priority on Exports, Online Multiplayer “Very Much on the Table”

Looking ahead to the future of Rock Band 4 on their website, developer Harmonix said the November and December updates are just the beginning, “and we remain committed to supporting Rock Band 4 as a game you’ll play for years to come with ongoing updates, fixes, and new features.”

Calling 2016 a very exciting year for the community, Harmonix confirmed two highly requested features – practice mode and setlists – are coming for free in 2016. The team will bring them back as soon as possible, once they’ve designed them and considered ways to improve them from Rock Band 3.

First up though, Harmonix is putting a priority on song exports from previous Rock Band games (the Rock Band 3 export is available now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). Scheduled to arrive in January for people who’ve exported their games, they’ll start with Rock Band before moving to Rock Band 2 and LEGO Rock Band. Because of this, January might have a couple weeks where no new DLC is released.

As for the January update, it will be modest compared to the December update, focusing on stability and performance, while also fixing leaderboard issues.

In addition to working on brand new experiences for Rock Band 4, Harmonix is actively working on a “bunch of other things,” including Xbox One support for ION drums.

One feature that could take some time before coming to Rock Band 4 is online multiplayer. While Harmonix says it’s on the table, they admit, “We’re not yet sure where it fits in our roadmap.”

They continue:

Part of our process includes taking your advice into consideration. Before we can deliver a feature as complex as Online Multiplayer, we would like to better understand what you want and find to be important. In an effort to drive that conversation forward, we’ll be sending out a survey about online play shortly so you can provide feedback that helps direct our development efforts as we make decisions about what to do next.

Harmonix took part in a Reddit AMA today, which you can read over here.
