Kojima Productions’ First Title Planned for PC After PS4 Release, Isn’t Related to Metal Gear or Silent Hills

In a Q&A released by Sony Computer Entertainment on Medium.com about the recent partnership between them and Kojima Productions, they revealed that the agreement was announced immediately after the contract was signed today, December 16.

The first title from Kojima Productions will be a “console exclusive” to PlayStation 4, meaning it won’t appear on Xbox One. While they aren’t disclosing details of the exclusivity length, Sony said the game is planned for release on PC after PS4.

Diving a little further into the deal, Sony confirmed Kojima Productions is an independent studio. Kojima Productions will handle development of the first title, with Sony publishing and providing support as necessary.

They added, “SCE is not investing in Kojima Productions. Cost of the contract is undisclosed. Cost is already incorporated. Impact is minimal.”

Here’s why Hideo Kojima wanted to partner with Sony:

Kojima is an extremely creative and passionate game designer who has made countless contributions to PlayStation and the gaming industry. By having Kojima develop his first independent title to PS4, we believe that we can deliver completely new gaming experiences made possibly only by Kojima, to gaming fans worldwide. We are not disclosing further details on how this agreement was realized.

As for the title itself, Sony said, “It will be something completely new,” and won’t have anything to do with the Metal Gear series or Silent Hills. In regards to a release window, potential PlayStation VR support, or a PlayStation Vita version, Sony said, “We have nothing to announce at this point in time.”

Sony also wouldn’t comment on whether Kojima’s second title (and beyond) would be PlayStation console exclusive, whether all future titles from them will be released on PS4, and whether Kojima Productions will develop titles for other platforms while working on the PS4 console exclusive.

Looking at another factor of the deal, Sony said Konami will remain one of their most important publishers, “and our relationship with them will not change.”
