After the news broke that Hideo Kojima formed a new studio to work on a brand new game that will debut on PlayStation 4, he sat down with IGN to discuss why he signed the agreement with Sony.
As Kojima explained, “I feel like this is an environment where I will be able to make something and feel comfortable, and I believe that’s the environment I need right now.”
When he left Konami, Kojima received “a lot of offers from overseas companies.” While he says it would have been interesting to work with an overseas partner, the decade-plus trust he’s built with Sony left him wanting to work with them on the first Kojima Productions project.
He added:
It’s thanks to Sony that I was able to make a splash in the global market. It’s been 10-plus years since then and the working relationship at Sony, the people at Sony, we gel well…. I got several offers from many different companies, but with Sony it came to a point where I know these people, they know me, we know each other well.
Because of the deal with Sony, Kojima Productions will have “more agility” and will be able to do things “that are more edgy, preserving the quality we’ve had so far, while at the same time finding new challenges and exploring new areas.”
Possibly hinting at future games from Kojima Productions being multi-platform, Kojima said, “One way or another, everything will end up being multi-platform.”
