From Paranoid Productions and Richard Rouse III (The Suffering), The Church in the Darkness is a top-down action-infiltration game coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in early 2017.
Set inside a cult in the 1970s and inspired by real-life events, The Church in the Darkness sees you playing as Vic, a former law enforcement officer, who visits Freedom Town to check on your sister’s son, Alex. As Rouse explains, “The core of the game is top-down, action-infiltration gameplay in the open map of Freedom Town. You get to play the way you want — you can play precisely and avoid detection completely, you can get the guards out of your path using non-lethal methods, or you can kill anyone who gets in your way.”
Designed to be highly replayable, Freedom Town is unique on every playthrough, where the characters are different and the motives of leaders Isaac and Rebecca change. You’ll learn about the story through messages from the town’s PA system, as well as documents and letters around the camp, determining whether the town is fine, or if “bad things will happen if you don’t do something to save these people.”
In terms of cast, Ellen McLain (GLaDOS from Portal) and John Patrick Lowrie (Sniper from Team Fortress 2) will play the roles of the cult leaders. They’ll also help compose the soundtrack.
