February 2016 Digital Sales Report: Industry Reaches $6.2 Billion, Console Sales up 34%

Totaling worldwide digital games market (PC, mobile, and console) sales from February 1 – 29, tracking firm SuperData says the industry was up 10% year-over-year, finishing at $6.2 billion.

The digital console market saw the biggest change of any segment, growing by 34% in terms of revenue and 27% in audience. However, because February 2016 saw fewer big new releases than February 2015, new game sales declined by 180,000. On the plus side, add-on content purchases “were strong and resulted in a positive revenue figure.”

Here’s the top grossing console games by revenue from February 2016:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  2. FIFA 16
  3. Grand Theft Auto V
  4. Madden NFL 16
  5. Fallout 4

Breaking down the digital console market, SuperData says playoff excitement helped Madden NFL 16 grow 23% month-over-month in revenue, with people spending money on in-game currency to buy Madden Ultimate team cards.

As for Street Fighter V, they say, “By contrast, Street Fighter V, one of the month’s biggest new titles failed to deliver Capcom spectacular sales and did not break into the top five for digital console games. This, despite Capcom deliberately designing the game as a long-running service.”
