Ratchet & Clank PS4 vs PS3 vs PS2 Head-to-Head Video Showcases New Technologies

DigitalFoundry has pieced together footage from the original PS2 Ratchet & Clank, the PS3 remaster, and the PS4 reboot, to present the ultimate comparison.

The video, found just above, offers a good look at the improvements in visual fidelity that the original title has experienced over the years. Though the PS3 remaster “just took the PS2 code and brushed up a few things here and there,” the PS4 reboot has “upped the spectacle” with “more enemies” and “more particles.”

The highlight in the PS4 reboot, according to DigitalFoundry’s Dave, is the level design.

In terms of the level design, that’s where things have really changed. There’s a lot of locations that are the same between the two [game versions], but then the level layouts around that have changed. You go through one familiar place, but then the routes are completely different as you move around the level. It’s like they’ve reworked everything to provide a fresh, new experience.

DigitalFoundry’s Tom also commented on the PS4 version, describing it as “a wholesale rewriting of everything, taken from top to bottom.” He observed, “They’ve redone the geometry and re-envisioned the whole game to current-gen standard.”

The new technologies employed within the reboot include camera and object motion blur, along with depth of field. Dave and Tom summarized that this is likely an attempt by Insomniac Games to “replicate the look of the new Ratchet & Clank movie.”
