PlayStation 4.5: EA “Not Afraid” of Potential Mid-Gen Upgrade

Pointing to the versatility of the Frostbite game engine, EA’s Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen has revealed the publisher is “not afraid” of a potential mid-generation hardware upgrade.

When quizzed about the possibility of a PlayStation 4.5 — rumored to be titled Neo — Jorgensen noted that Electronic Arts “doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about it.” That in large part comes down to EA’s strategy to double down on Frostbite, allowing developers to tweak and refine the engine to suit any given hardware from this point onwards.

Also included in the publisher’s quarterly earnings call was a sales forecast for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One through until the year’s end. According to Jorgensen, both Sony and Microsoft’s systems will sell another 25 million units combined before 2017, though the company’s CFO stopped short of noting how he predicts that estimated tally will be divided between each platform.
