Homefront: The Revolution Ranges From 15fps – 30fps on PS4 & Xbox One, According to Analysis

Following reports earlier this week that Homefront: The Revolution suffered from frame-rate issues even with the day one update installed, Digital Foundry has done a performance analysis, revealing that it typically runs anywhere from 15fps – 30fps on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Playing with the day one update installed (1.02 on PS4), Digital Foundry says the PS4 version supports native 1080p, while the Xbox One is at 900p. In terms of frame-rate, the Xbox One has the advantage, beating the PS4 on average by 3fps during regular gameplay. “Neither can be considered a success though and at its nadir, PS4 is prone to 15fps drops,” they add, “while Xbox One hits a similar 16fps just as alpha effects kick in.”

As you can see in the above comparison video (1:20), walking through the main Elmtree area sees frame-rates dropping to 20-25fps, and the PS4 version features screen-tearing near the top. Then, at 3:05, you’ll get a look at the game’s auto-save issue, which causes the game to freeze for five to ten seconds. Since the game auto-saves frequently (after buying a new gun, accepting a new mission, moving to a new area, and more), they say it can become a nuisance.

Although there are times when Homefront: The Revolution does run at 30fps, usually during indoor firefights, frame-pacing problems in these stretches cause animation issues.

All in all, Digital Foundry gives the edge to the Xbox One in terms of frame-rate, but they find it difficult to fully recommend either version. “Too much time is spent at the lower end of the 20-30fps spectrum, and given the game’s high difficulty, this sluggish visual response creates another, unnecessary hurdle when it comes to tasks as simple – and as crucial – as targeting enemies.”
