The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine Console Analysis Says “PS4 Gets the Better Deal Overall”

The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine expansion has now released, taking players to the remote land of Toussaint to meet new characters, slay more monsters, and earn better loot. Of course, none of this would matter if the game’s performance was unplayable.

Thankfully, this is no Far Harbor, as showcased by the clever chaps over at Digital Foundry. Looking specifically at the console versions of the expansion, the team noted that “given the complex visual design of this expansion, frame-rate delivery is still usually smooth on both consoles.” They added that, while the Xbox One edition is certainly playable, the “PS4 gets the better deal overall, with a tighter lock on 30fps, broader foliage draw distances and a native 1080p image.”

It also seems that there’s some truth to the “graphics upgrade” that CD Projekt Red claimed the expansion would include. According to DF, “the latest expansion marks the team’s biggest step forward, with optimisations allowing for more ambitious visuals, and with fewer penalties in performance.”

If you’ve yet to explore the land of Toussaint, and this positive report of its performance has you convinced to buy, do remember that it’ll take up over 13GB of storage, so get the space on your hard drive cleared. Those with average speed internet should also leave plenty of hours in advance for the download. Pro-tip: Set the expansion to download overnight, making sure your PS4 is able to download content in Rest Mode. You’ll then wake up with Blood and Wine ready to play, with everything having downloaded while you were sleeping. Success!

For those who have dived into the Blood and Wine expansion, what do you make of The Witcher 3‘s last foreseeable content drop? Is it a fine farewell to Geralt and CD Projekt Red’s grand adventure? I’ll be giving it a go this weekend. Needless to say, I’m very excited to see the extra content that PlayStation LifeStyle’s Game of the Year 2015 boasts.
