In a new post from Mojang COO Vu Bui, it was revealed that the Minecraft movie is releasing on May 24, 2019 in 3D and IMAX.

Bui added:

Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?

That’s it for now, but as time goes on we’ll share loads more. Loads!

Not much is known about the Minecraft movie, but we do know it’s coming from Warner Bros, with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney set to direct.

Back in 2014, Bui said it was too early to talk about whether it would be live-action or animated. When asked about plot details, he replied:

We don’t want any story that we make, whether it’s a movie or a book, to create some sort of ‘this is the official Minecraft, this is how you play the game’ thing. That would discourage all the players who don’t play in that way. When coming up with a story, we want to make sure it is just a story within Minecraft, as opposed to the story within Minecraft.

Earlier this year, Producer Roy Lee said, “Minecraft would be part of a multiverse where humans can enter that has the feel of what the live-action version of a Minecraft experience,” and they’re going for “the same target audience as Jurassic World.”

Currently, Minecraft has sold more than 106 million copies.

What do you want to see from the Minecraft movie?
