With DICE stating that the gun attachments in Battlefield 1 will be “era authentic,” does this mean the developer compromised when it came to gameplay just to make sure the authenticity to World War 1 is spot on? This is the question we asked DICE Lead Level Designer Dan Berlin at E3.
PSLS: How important was it for DICE to be historically accurate?
Berlin: It’s definitely something that’s been a thing going through this whole process. Authenticity is very important to us, but at the end of the day, you know, it’s a game, and gameplay and all those things come first. Even though the weapons you’ll see in game are actual weapons we used in conflicts, and vehicles and things are authentic, it’s grounded in this authenticity, but it’s a game, and the fun comes first, (especially) in terms of balancing.
I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have a fun game than one that’s painstakingly point-for-point accurate to its source material. Glad to see DICE seems to find a healthy compromise.
In case you missed it, Berlin also confirmed that planes can be damaged by regular rounds now, and how DICE wants players to change how they play with Battlefield 1’s dynamic weather system.
Stay tuned to our full interview with Berlin set to hit the site very soon.
