New Uncharted 4 Video Shows How Devs Brought Life and Depth to the Game’s Graphics

Naughty Dog has released a new video, highlighting how its Technical Artists and Programmers brought “life, depth, and detail” to the world of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Titled Art Influencing Technology, the 5-min video features developers Waylon Brinck, Carlos Gonzalez-Ochoa, and Andrew Maximov.

“What makes Uncharted 4‘s graphics unique is we have a physically based render,” says the studio. “The material responds, the lighting, everything obeys as close as it can the physical rules of reality. But the art direction specified almost a more painterly look.”

The team understandably faced some technical challenges.

The biggest technical challenge with Uncharted 4 was just the sheer variety of stuff that we have to do, and do well.

As a Lead Technical Artist, we usually try to find that kind of bridge between programming and art. And we try to make sure that the needs of both are met.

We’re also told that graphics programming is “not a very sexy task” as there are a lot of complications and details that need to be looked into.

The full video offers some pretty interesting insight so make sure to check it out.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was released in May this year and received critical acclaim. You can check out our review here.
