New Video Explains How Guerrilla Games Created the Vast Open World of Horizon Zero Dawn

In a new video, Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerrilla Games gives us an insight into how the team went about creating the expansive open world in its upcoming action RPG. We’re told that the game includes a variety of environments – from deserts to snowy mountains – with dynamic day and night cycles.

“Each of the eco-topes within the game present their own distinct environment, machines, and weather behavior,” reads the video’s description.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony explains how protagonist Aloy can use the terrain for various objectives.

Clifftops and outcrops can be used to spot prey, while the long grasses provide cover when she moves in to stalk the machines. Traps can be set amongst narrow mountain passes, then machines can be lured into them; it’s a strategy that has countless iterations in each part of the map, and something that promises great depth of gameplay when more of the tools, traps and areas are revealed.

Horizon Zero Dawn releases on February 28 for the PlayStation 4.
