Following Nintendo’s big reveal late yesterday of its upcoming console the Nintendo Switch, the folks here at PlayStation LifeStyle had differing opinions on Nintendo’s reveal and announcements.

The launch lineup is a trainwreck of unknowns, ports of games we already have on other consoles (some even last gen consoles), and Zelda, which of course is the one thing anyone cares about with this system and is going ape balls over it. Zelda is realistically why it doesn't matter to most that the rest of the launch lineup sucks and Nintendo is failing to show anything really innovative about the Switch. The rest of anything maybe halfway decent we'll see in about a year's time.
Moving on to the console itself, I maintain that it lacks true utility. People will not "switch" it, and it will primarily be used in traditional console mode. Fortunately it's not priced too crazy for the gimmicks, and includes the 'pro' controller that is a traditional game pad. If a traditional pad is the pro controller, why bother with the other gimmicks? Vita has already proven that the utility of living room experiences on the go doesn't translate. Most people will never play in the way the marketing presents the console, same way that Sprite didn't make your life a young adult happy fantasy land. At the same price as a PS4 slim, given the choice? I'd tell people to go with the PS4 or even Xbox One S over the Switch right now.Everything else the Switch does outside of its marketable, but utility-lacking, gimmicks, is basically what the other consoles are doing but better. It just feels that Nintendo is trying to hard to be that different piece of hardware, and much like the Wii, Switch will see a lot of sales, but also a lot of people either never using them or selling them later on after they've realize that they essentially paid $360 to play the new Zelda game.Still haven't won me over, Nintendo. Try a little harder, or perhaps stop trying so hard. -

Eh, I might give it a try. I don't remember the last time I was excited about something Nintendo put out, which is a bit of a shame since Nintendo is all I owned up until the PS2. Even bought the Wii and enjoyed it somewhat, but the games just don't do it for me anymore. While I'm not suggesting that Nintendo should compete with PlayStation or Xbox, the amount of casual/feel-good games à la Nintendo's is increasing fast on both consoles, leaving little reason for people to pick up the Switch. I'm sure there will be a market but Nintendo's archetypal lineup can't make it last forever in the hardware business. They've GOT to come up with more.

As a lifelong Nintendo fan, I was sold before I learned of even one spec, one feature, one game. However, the fact that Breath of the Wild is a launch title makes this twice as appealing to me. Like Chandler has said, that's all anyone cares about.For me, there are a few other things. I'm obsessed with Mario games. I just completed every coin in Super Mario Run and I just completed Super Mario Bros 3 on my NES Classic. So a new sandbox Mario with dramatically different levels is super exciting.Lastly, I do love Nintendo innovation. While everyone else failed to see the Wii U's genius, for me, playing Wario on the Wii U and seeing the unique ways the screen/gamepad combo is used made the system worth it to me. I find it incredibly interesting they're positioning Switch as a home console, mobile console, and this unique table top party console. 1, 2, Switch is bold enough to not even need a screen. It's a stand up, face-to-face party game. It's kinda dumb, but serves to me as an example of opening up new gameplay opportunities and that's why I love Nintendo.I personally think the Switch is going to follow the Wii's footsteps and not the Wii U. There is already much more excitement, much more developer support, and... The Legend of Zelda at launch. If that can't get them off to a better start, nothing can. -

I'm really excited for the Nintendo Switch, even if the presentation was delivered pretty poorly. As far as first-party games go, I'm already anticipating Nintendo's 2017 lineup more than what Sony or Microsoft has to offer. In just 9 months the console will deliver The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Splatoon 2. That's more than enough to sell me on the system for 2017 (and there will be more titles on top of that), and having future games like Shin Megami Tensei Switch and No More Heroes confirmed to be coming later on has me feeling good about the investment. Nobody makes games quite like Nintendo, and while they can frustrate me like no other company, I'm never going to ignore some of the greatest games that the industry has to offer.

I absolutely plan on picking up a Switch...eventually. I've been intrigued from the start, but last night's presentation wasn't enough to sway me into a day-one purchase. Breath of the Wild looks incredible, but take that away and the launch lineup suddenly loses its draw. Tyler's right, no one makes games quite like Nintendo, and the company have and always will bank on Mario, Zelda and other mascots, but sometimes that isn't enough to satisfy the hardest of hardcore. Switch won't compete with PS4 and Xbox One (maybe it doesn't have to?) and if nothing else, PlayStation fans and Vita owners in particular can look on at the Nintendo Switch and wonder what could have been.

Nintendo hasn't spoken to me since the N64. The Switch is priced at $299.99; the same price as PlayStation 4 Slim and Xbox One S. I can't believe anyone would buy a Switch without having one of the other two first. That's an awful market approach. It is destined to fail.

I just preordered a Switch so I can always cancel it later if I get cold feet or super broke. I'm a hardcore Zelda fan, so it was a bit of a no-brainer for me since Breath of the Wild is going to be a launch title. Super Mario Odyssey looks to be quite amazing too, and I'm excited about the future Xenoblade Chronicles X 2 as well as Dragon Quest 1 & 2.

Color me intrigued. The last Nintendo console I owned was the Wii, and I'm kinda itching to play some Zelda and Mario Kart. I do admit that I don't like the online stuff we've heard so far, but I honestly think I might not even use it for any online multiplayer at all. I can see myself playing local co-op with my kids and playing it for Nintendo exclusives and that's it.
Still on the fence but if I see it come launch, I'll snatch one up. If not, I'll wait.

I thought it was a pretty weak presentation, overall. It's a shame, because I love the idea of the hardware and its ability to function both as a handheld and home console.
Zelda looks incredible, with its clutch save trailer at the end of the conference. Everything else, besides "GTA Mario," was a little too meh for such an important event.
With that said, I've pre-ordered the console...
