Yooka-Laylee Dev Explains Reasoning Behind $40 Price Point

Taking a leaf from Ratchet & Clank‘s book, when Yooka-Laylee touches down in mid-April, Playtonic’s Kickstarter darling will be priced at $39.99 (£34.99/€39.99) in order to reach “as broad an audience as possible.” That price point applies to non-Kickstarter backers, too.

To explain the reasoning behind Playtonic’s decision, the studio’s Communications Director Andy Robinson sat down with We Write Things to discuss pricing, crowdfunding, and the support of those 70,000 backers that helped fire Yooka-Laylee into development in the first place.

Playtonic has partnered with British publisher Team17 to distribute Yooka-Laylee, and here Robinson provides some context to that $40 price tag.

“We want to reach as broad an audience as possible with Yooka-Laylee and hopefully help a brand new generation of gamers experience the open-world platforming genre for the first time. We’ve been able to develop our first game thanks to the amazing support of our 70,000 Kickstarter backers and although they’re getting the game for a much bigger discount, if possible we wanted to pass on a saving to those who missed the crowdfunding campaign too.”

Yooka-Laylee has been earmarked for release on April 11. A boxed version is in the works, too.
