January 2017 NPD: PS4 Was the #1 System Again, Xbox One Had Its Best January Ever

Sony has revealed that PlayStation 4 was the #1 selling system of January 2017 in the United States, beating Xbox One for a third straight month, according to data from the NPD.

In a statement to GameSpot, Sony added that four of the five best-selling games during the month were for PS4. The NPD should reveal the top 10 titles of January next week, where Resident Evil 7 is likely to finish near the top.

Xbox Marketing Corporate VP Mike Nichols issued a statement to GamesBeat about the results, saying Xbox One had its best January ever, and Xbox One was the only current-generation console to see year-on-year growth:

Thanks to continued support by our fans, 2017 is off to a strong start as Xbox One game hours grew 21 percent year-over-year. In addition, in the U.S., Xbox One had its best January to date and was the only eighth generation console that saw growth in January compared to the prior year according to NPD Group. Team Xbox is committed to delivering the best gaming experiences for our fans.

Last month, Microsoft said December 2016 was the biggest month ever for Xbox One in the United States, but NPD data showed it was beaten by PlayStation 4.

Since the beginning of 2014, PS4 is the world’s best-selling console.
