Sony Focusing on Increasing the Number of Younger PS Vita Users in Japan

The Western market for Sony’s PlayStation Vita has been the subject of much debate from time to time but Japanese developers have significantly supported the handheld and undoubtedly continue to do so. While some criticize Sony’s support (or lack thereof) for Vita in the West, the company still has faith in the Japanese market.

In an interview with Trendy Nikkei last week (translation courtesy of Kotaku), SCE Japan Asia boss Atsushi Morita said that since Minecraft‘s release on the handheld in 2014, the company has been “actively” trying to bring more younger gamers on board.

“Since Minecraft came out in October 2014, we’ve been able to actively bring on board kids; that is, younger gamers,” he said. “We’re going to continue concentrating on the PS Vita and increase the number of younger users. This year, we also plan on developing an IP that’s aimed at children.”

Recently, NieR: Automata director Yoko Taro tweeted his desire to see a PS Vita successor, noting that a next-gen handheld can do what smartphones can’t.
