Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Is No Longer Episodic, New Teaser Trailer Released

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, a third person action-adventure survival game set millions of years ago, received a new teaser trailer today featuring in-game pre-alpha footage. The trailer’s description adds, “The player will relive the early story of mankind with a documentary twist. Humanity is one idea away from evolution or extinction… Stay tuned much more to come in 2017!”

Discussing Ancestors at Reboot Develop, Panache Digital Games Founder Patrice Désilets revealed that it’s no longer episodic:

It’s a third-person adventure game set 10 million years ago. Before it was episodic and that changed the pace, but the content is the same. It’s a bigger game, a bigger world. It was hour to hour, now it’s open and I let the player tell their own stories. There are systems talking to each other, not me taking players by the hand. You’ll create the story of your own ancestors, and maybe it will be different than what science claims.

In terms of gameplay, you can expect something similar to his previous titles, Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia. “I do third-person games,” he said. “I don’t do VR. I do Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia type of games, and my next 15 games will be in the same vein – if I don’t die in the meantime.”

Désilets also talked about how Ancestors is set in Africa, there will be resource management and survival elements, there are no swords (there will be a tree branch eventually), and the project is well-funded and is being worked on by 25 people. Additionally, he mentioned that his other project, 1666 Amsterdam, is on hold.

Asked about platforms for Ancestors on Twitter, Panache Digital Games said, “We are not ready to announce the platforms yet.” As for a release date, they said, “Same for the launch date, we are not ready to announce it.”

Ancestors is expected to be playable this year (presumably at E3 and/or gamescom).
