Open world survival game The Long Dark, which has been in Early Access on other platforms for a while now, will finally make its way to the PlayStation 4 this August, which mark the game’s official final release date and the release of its story mode.
Here’s an overview of the game, according to its website:
The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies — only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.
In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Hinterland Creative Director Raphael van Lierop explained that The Long Dark’s story mode, called Wintermute, will be divided into five episodes, with the first two releasing in August while the latter three coming out sometime later in 2017 and 2018.
According to Lierop, the studio took inspiration from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, a post-apocalyptic story about the journey and relationship between a father and his young son, for The Long Dark’s narrative mode.
Wintermute stars bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood as they crash in the middle of the Canadian wilderness due to a “mysterious geomagnetic disaster.” Lierop says that players will play as Mackenzie during the game’s first two episodes but will also be able to play as Dr. Greenwood in future episodes.
The Long Dark and its story mode are scheduled for release on the PlayStation 4 and other platforms on August 1, 2017. Check out the trailer for the game’s PS4 release above.
