Sony: PlayStation VR Sales Top 1 Million, 20% of PS4 Sales Since November Are a Pro

Discussing sales figures with The Verge, Sony Interactive Entertainment America President Shawn Layden revealed that PlayStation VR has sold more than one million copies since launch in October. Additionally, 5.25 million VR games have been sold so far, and the average play session is 25 minutes.

At the end of February, Sony said PSVR sales were over 915,000.

If you’re looking to buy a PSVR, Layden said there will be more stock this year:

We’ll have freer supply in the marketplace. We got to a point around Christmas where you would be hard-pressed to find VR anywhere. So we dialed back some of our promotional activity at that time because we didn’t want to be promoting a platform for people to find out they couldn’t get it. I didn’t want to create more unhappy customers.

As for the PlayStation 4 Pro, Sony would’ve give out specific sales numbers, but they did say that one in five PlayStation 4s sold since November have been a Pro. Furthermore, around 40% of PS4 Pro sales are from people upgrading their older PS4 model.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe President Jim Ryan told Polygon:

We have been sold out [of the PSVR] ever since launch and it’s only within the last month or so that it’s started to come into supply and we’re feverishly getting the factory cranked up as fast as we can. And as with VR, [PS4 Pro sales] have been restricted by our ability to supply the market.

In an interview with Business Insider discussing PlayStation VR, Ryan added, “We would not describe one million units the same as mass adoption. But we would call it a good start.” He also told Time that PS4 Pro is “way ahead of our expectations.”

Overall, PS4 sales to consumers are “close to” 60 million, and Layden adds that it’s “the fastest selling hardware that we’ve ever had and may be the fastest one on the market.”
