Telltale Making a New IP, Games May Come to Set-top Boxes and Streaming Services

Telltale Games is most known for its games featuring popular franchises such as The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Guardians of the Galaxy. But it looks like the company is finally working on a new IP and its platform of choice may not be what people automatically think.

Speaking to GameSpot at E3, Telltale Games Head of Communications Job Stauffer said:

An original, new IP is definitely still in our future. It may not be as immediate as the next few things we have coming up. We haven’t been able to say a lot about it in the last few years.

I think the landscape of what’s possible in digital interactive media, particularity in the streaming environment, and quite frankly the VR space, is very exciting. And while there is nothing to announce right now, I think you can look forward [to a Telltale new IP] further on in the future. Yes, it’s still something we very much have in our minds.

Additionally, Stauffer also talked about Telltale planning to bring its roster of games to new platforms such as set-top boxes and even streaming services like Netflix:

I think there is a lot of space for Telltale to move on to platforms that most people don’t even really consider to be game systems. A lot of boxes of many different varieties in homes–millions and millions of homes across America, where people don’t even think game-playing is possible on them, but maybe they’re watching stories or consuming narrative-driven content or streaming it.

And for us, we’re looking at that. It would be unfathomable to think about playing a Grand Theft Auto [game] over Netflix. But it wouldn’t be so unfathomable to think about playing a Telltale game over a streaming video service of that calibre.

The Telltale experience will be expanding onto services and devices that are already on millions of homes across the world. And we’ll be talking more about it this summer.

Being able to play Telltale’s roster of games through Netflix or other streaming services does sound like a novel idea and something that would expand the company’s reach tremendously. Whether the company will be able to pull it off though is still unknown. We’ll just have to wait and see what Telltale comes up with in the next few years.

In the meantime, the company is currently in the middle of releasing Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series and is scheduled to release Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two next month.
