Former Sony Exec Says “Powerful Distribution Network” Helped Put the PS4 on Top

It’s no question that Sony is currently ahead in the console race, selling over 60 million PS4s since its launch back in 2013. Xbox One, on the other hand, has reportedly sold about half of that number in roughly the same amount of time. In an interview with VentureBeat, former Sony and Microsoft executive Phil Harrison has said that the PS4’s success has partially been due to Sony’s establishment of what he calls a “powerful distribution network outside of the U.S. and the U.K.

He doesn’t go into detail about this powerful distribution network but we can assume that he’s referring to Sony’s initiative over the past few years to have an official presence in more markets than ever before. With the launch of the PS4, Sony has been able to officially enter previously untapped markets such as China and other parts of Asia, enabling it to provide official distribution, support, and marketing in those regions and territories, which has ostensibly increased its reach.

Harrison also said that the PlayStation’s success can also be attributed to its clear and precise proposition with the PS4 as a powerful gaming console compared to Microsoft’s wider, more ambiguous message with the Xbox One.
