Ranking the Final Fantasy Games

This week marks the release of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (make sure to check out our review), which means that the legendary role-playing game franchise will be back in the minds of thousands of players. This got us at PlayStation LifeStyle thinking about the Final Fantasy series’ storied history, and we decided to rank all of the mainline games from worst to best. While many of the early titles weren’t originally released on a PlayStation console, they’ve all been re-released over the years, which means every game from the original to the recently released Final Fantasy XV is in the conversation.

Before we get onto the list, here are a few things to consider. First off, since there are so many Final Fantasy titles that have been released over the years, we only ranked the main series. That means secondary sequels like Final Fantasy X-2 and Lightning Returns weren’t eligible, let alone spin-offs like Chocobo Racing. Second, and most importantly, there wasn’t some mathematical formula to come up with this list. It’s all just a matter of opinion.

We hope you enjoyed our look at the Final Fantasy series. Square Enix’s monumental role-playing game series has had a tremendous impact on the industry over the years, and has been remarkably consistent in terms of quality. The top half of the list is really splitting hairs, so it doesn’t mean an entry was bad just because it didn’t come in first place. Each entry has its own quirks and story beats, which is why it’s so much fun to discuss them all.

In your opinion, which are the best Final Fantasy games? Which is the worst entry in the franchise? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
